My name is Shirley Harris-Slaughter. I have been a published author since 2007. I got the urge to write when I realized that no one else was going to save our history. It was up to me. So I wrote Our Lady of Victory, the Saga of an African-American Catholic Community. Something that started out as just a timeline of events honoring the pioneers of this West Eight Mile Community, turned into a narrative history. Like most of you I am an Indie author struggling to get recognition in a crowded field. Thank goodness for Rave Reviews Book Club! It’s all about supporting and helping authors. I joined and participated in the creation of this wonderful outlet for our works.  Rave Reviews is the brainchild of Nonnie Jules, Founder & President. She took the time to read my book and give an honest review.

She does the “President’s Pick” in “Reviews In The News,” a weekly newsletter published on the Rave Reviews website, where my book was recently selected to be profiled. We now have #PUSHTUESDAY, and a new promotion “Who’s On the Shelf” with Nonnie Jules  to recognize our member-author’s works, a mentorship program and so much more.

To date, I can add “Spotlight” Author & “Who’s On the Shelf” to the  list of promotions I have been a part of through Rave Reviews Book Club.

I am also a community activist and from time to time I put my name on petitions to stop something or another, or call my representatives if that’s what it takes to get something done. My latest campaign is about the POTHOLES that are driving us crazy here in Michigan. So I started a petition drive and I NEED 500+ SIGNATURES to make an impact, preferably from the citizens of our great state. If you can’t sign it but know someone here in Michigan, please share this… https://www.credomobilize.com/petitions/infrastructure-that-s-falling-apart-filling-potholed-roads.

Thanks for allowing me to share with you!

Book Blurb:

OUR LADY OF VICTORY – The Saga of an African American Catholic Community is a compilation of memories, records, photos and interviews.  The author recalls growing up in the legacy of Mother Anna Bates.

Follow the tale of the infamous wall…built to separate blacks from white residents and how it almost impeded the development of the area.  It’s the story of a thriving Catholic community in spite of regressive government policies; on the verge of developing strong Catholic roots but doesn’t quite make it.

This is the Saga of an African-American Catholic Community.  Don’t run from the information housed inside the covers of this book because the mere mention of black and white being divided makes you uncomfortable.  Run towards this historical narrative because, whether black or white, yellow or brown, if we don’t know the history, we are surely destined to repeat it!  I dare you to read this book and walk away unmoved!
