A GREAT LITERARY COMMUNITY! by John Fioravanti

Our club was founded on the belief that when you support (without waiting to be supported first), you get so much in return.  “Fill the plates of others first, and when you’re all done, you will realize just how full your own plate is.”  That’s our philosophy here at RRBC, and if you’re not getting our kind of support, then today is the day you should JOIN US!

~ Nonnie Jules

As I look back at my last 18 months as a member of Rave Reviews Book Club, founded by President Nonnie Jules, there have been many exciting developments! As a retired high school History teacher, I was working to launch a writing career as an Independent Author/Publisher, or “Indie”. Then I met Chris Ward from the UK on LinkedIn, who encouraged me to join RRBC and I did! It was the wisest thing I did in 2014 because I found a new home!

Some say that a home is where you hang your hat, but I say that home is where your heart resides. I was warmly welcomed as soon as I joined – admittedly, looking for support to help launch my writing career. It wasn’t long before I discovered the secret at the heart of Nonnie Jules’ vision… those who support others will themselves be supported… royally! I asked questions, I learned, I volunteered and before I knew it, I was being Profiled, Promoted, and Propelled by this very supportive community.

While studying for the Roman Catholic priesthood, I spent a year and a half living in a religious community and learned, by immersion, how a community operates. As I became more and more involved with the club, I could see that this virtual community was operating by the same principle of service that Nonnie Jules identifies in the above quote. Before I knew it, I was invited to join the Governing Board and then I learned first-hand about the kind of service delivered by this club from the top on down. It was this opportunity to serve that fired my spirit so that I willingly became the administrator that I had refused to become during my first career in education!

2015 was just the second year of existence for this extraordinary international community spanning several continents. We reside in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia, and we’re still growing! In addition to the phenomenal growth, we have been delighted by the creative genius of our president. She is constantly dreaming up new ways to profile, promote and propel our members to new heights – all the while modeling for everyone the practice of support for others.

New activities introduced in 2015 included Pay It Forward Weeks whereby members stop supporting their own books on social media and shift their efforts exclusively to the support of fellow members. Last spring saw the exciting advent of the Rave Waves BlogTalkRadio shows featuring interviews of member authors. We aired eight different shows each month for the balance of the year and have added a ninth in 2016.RW - Aspire to Inspire

As well, we launched two separate month-long Block Parties in September and December which allowed participants to showcase their books, websites, blogs and book trailers. Finally, in December, we began a weekly feature called Have You Met… where two members are introduced to the entire membership with a picture and bio description.

If you are looking for a vibrant group of like-minded authors and readers, who shun the practice of competition in favour of cooperation and mutual support, then look no further than Rave Reviews Book Club. I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this thriving community and to offer them my service. When I retired from teaching, I had trouble adjusting because I felt that I was no longer making a difference in the world. This great literary community has given me back my purpose and a new lease on life. You just can’t buy perks like that!

Its fascinating to me to learn some of the reasons why people join RRBC and what they get out of it. Each story is so unique and so is yours John. I couldn’t have said it better.

Amen to all that John – I bless the day I joined RRBC and met great people like yourself, Nonnie and so many other wonderful RRBC people (not all of them writers) who truly love books and spread the word out, so other people will love them too!

What do you think? - I love comments!
